She’s always been known for her catchy pop records as she fought the battle between being a singer and one of Disney’s biggest TV stars – but Miley Cyrus says she is glad to have broken free and is now able to try her hand at all different sounds.
Calling it her “biggest album to date”, the singer said recording this LP was completely on her own terms and she is excited about the new direction – and sound -that she has gone in.
Speaking to Cosmopolitan, she said the most important thing in her life was her relationship with actor Liam Hemsworth because it gives her confidence, especially at a time when she is feeling the pressure of making a new album, and added: “There’s so much hype behind my new record, but it could come out and, worst-case scenario, everyone f***ing hates it.”
But one thing she is thankful for when she got in the studio was the freedom to make it on her own terms.
She said: “I’ve never gotten to make a record like this because Disney’s always been on my back saying, ‘You’ve got to promote the TV show in two months, so make sure your record’s done…and when you promote your record, can you promote the show, the movie and the “Hannah Montana” record?’
“I was basically carrying two people’s careers and trying to make mine the priority. Now, it’s almost like being a new artist and trying to make a first impression.”
And she’s certainly pulling out the stops – she has teamed up with Pharrell Williams and Mary J. Blige and Odd Future member Tyler, The Creator.
She said: “I wrote this song with Mary J. Blige, and Tyler, the Creator heard it and said, ‘I am obsessed with this song, and I will guest on it if you promise me that you will keep it on the album.’ And he killed it!
“I really didn’t want to make a hip-hop record, and I’m not trying at all to be a Rihanna or a Nicki [Minaj]….That’s not my vibe. When I was growing up, my older brother would sneak me Nelly CDs, my dad had me listening to Dolly [Parton] and Johnny [Cash], and my mom is a complete metal head. So this record is a weird mixture of all that.”
And while on the subject of Odd Future members, she came out in defence of Frank Ocean, who revealed that he was gay last year.
She said: “I like that he came out and admitted he was gay, because that still affects people’s careers. If you don’t think it does, it f***ing does, and he did not care. I think it’s going to make him even bigger.”
