Billy Ray Cyrus certainly knows how to burn a bridge. First he angers his daughter Miley by comparing her to Anna Nicole Smith. Then he attacks Disney, saying ‘Hannah Montana’ destroyed his family. Now he goes and upsets TV legend Barbara Walters after his daughter forced him to drop out of a scheduled interview on ‘The View’ this week.
“When Miley found out her father was scheduled to appear on ‘The View’ on Wednesday she went nuts,” a family friend tells me. “Only last week, Billy shot his mouth off in GQ, and now he planned to sit down with [Barbara and Whoopi] and talk more crap about his family. No way would Miley or her team let that happen.”
The GQ interview started off a firestorm after Billy Ray’s bombshell that he feels isolated from his daughter, blaming everyone but himself. “I’m scared for her,” he said in the interview. “She’s got a lot of people around her that’s putting her in a great deal of danger. I want to get her sheltered from the storm.”
Billy Ray’s comments had come out of nowhere, leaving everyone, including Miley, to wonder why her dad had decided to go public with private family matters.
“At first Miley defended her dad, wanting to believe he had been tricked into saying bad things by the magazine,” an insider with knowledge of situation tells me. “Miley truly wanted to give her father the benefit of the doubt, goodness knows she’s said things she wishes she could take back. But after she found out about his media trip to New York, no more excuses could be made.”
True, you don’t accidentally end up as a guest on ‘The View.’ That is a heavily planned event!
Billy Ray’s representative confirmed to me that his trip to NYC had been canceled, at least for now.
Billy Ray Cyrus raised eyebrows earlier this week when he told GQ that his daughter Miley’s star-making gig on Hannah Montana — and Satan — have destroyed his family, and that he’s desperate to get his famous offspring “sheltered from the storm.”
Michael Lohan understands: The man knows what it’s like to see your little girl try her hand at show business and explode into a bigger star anyone could’ve imagined, only to see the rug pulled out in the wake of tabloid scandals.
That’s why the father of embattled Hollywood starlet Lindsay Lohan has penned this heartfelt letter to his fellow famous dad, offering up wisdom, advice and sympathy for the Achy Breaky Heart singer in this RadarOnline.com exclusive.
Oh My God! Am I seeing and reliving almost the same exact situations, scrutiny, pain and willingness to sacrifice yourself, for the sake of your family?
As hard and frustrating as it is, believe me when I say, it’s a road worth traveled. Even if it may have its’ bumps and grinds along the way.
As I was raised, there is nothing like the love a man has for his family nor is there any length he will go to save or protect them.
The hardest part is, experiencing the pain that comes from the resistance of the very one(s) you are trying to save.
Insiders are not surprised he is blaming his family woes on “Hannah Montana.”
Billy Ray Cyrus might have made headlines with his pronouncement in the March issue of GQ that his daughter’s Disney Channel show Hannah Montana “destroyed” their family and that he is now estranged from 18-year-old Miley.
But within the Disney empire that made her an international star, few were surprised by the bombshell interview.
A Disney insider tells THR that both Miley and Billy Ray have been clear with the company about their desire to distance themselves from the Mouse House since Hannah Montana ended its five-year run in January.
In particular, Miley Cyrus, whose 2010 romance The Last Song grossed $60 million domestically for Disney’s Touchstone label, has no movie projects in development with the studio because she is determined to foster a more adult image. (She will next be seen in LOL, an April high school comedy for Mandate and Lionsgate, then So Undercover, in which she plays a private eye who infiltrates a sorority.)
“We saw it coming for a long time,” the Disney source says. “She wanted to mature herself, but it kind of backfired. Her future without Disney is TBD.”
In the GQ article, Billy Ray blames Miley’s handlers for the recent controversies involving his daughter, including a video of her smoking salvia. (She’s repped by CAA, manager Jason Morey and publicist Meghan Prophet; all declined comment.)
He also claims in the article that he never made money off his daughter, a suggestion the Disney source calls “ludicrous.”
